Start with the purpose of the sample
Tell the supplier whether you are checking loose material, evaluating a compressed block, comparing treatment options or planning a growing-system trial. A handful of loose pith cannot demonstrate block weight or packing performance. A photograph of a block cannot establish its chemistry.
Share your crop or application, container size, current medium and irrigation context. Ask your grower or agronomist to set the relevant acceptance criteria. This guide is a purchasing checklist, not a universal crop recommendation.
Make the sample traceable
Request a sample reference, dispatch date, product format and treatment description. Ask whether it comes from a particular production batch or is a representative development sample. Keep that distinction in your evaluation record: an approved development sample is not automatically evidence for a later shipment.
- Sample reference and supplier contact.
- Origin or factory reference where available and appropriate.
- Washed, buffered or other agreed treatment, with supporting information.
- Quantity received, packaging condition and date received.
- Link between the sample, any test report and the quoted product.

Record physical checks under agreed conditions
Inspect the material for visible foreign matter, particle distribution, fines and fiber. Record what you observe rather than assigning a grade from appearance alone. If particle sizes matter to your application, ask for the screening method and an agreed way to measure the distribution.
For compressed blocks, record the received weight and dimensions. Agree how hydration and expanded volume will be measured, including water added, time allowed, drainage and how the container is filled. Compare samples using the same procedure. An expansion figure without its measurement conditions is not a complete acceptance specification.
| Check | Record | Before approval |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Sample and report references | Confirm what future supply will be compared against |
| Block and expansion | Weight, dimensions and hydration procedure | Agree method and acceptance range |
| EC and pH | Results, units and extraction method | Compare like-for-like reports |
| Application trial | Trial conditions and observations | Review with the grower before scaling up |
Ask for usable test evidence
Request EC and pH results with the sample identity, method, units and test date. If your specification needs individual-ion analysis or particular treatment evidence, state that explicitly; a single EC number does not answer every chemical-quality question. Read our guide to comparing cocopeat EC reports before comparing offers.
Keep treatment and measurement separate. “Low EC” is not proof of buffering. Our washed versus buffered cocopeat guide explains the terminology and the evidence to request.
Run a small application trial, then document the decision
Where growing performance matters, compare the proposed material with your existing medium under clearly recorded conditions. A small trial can reveal questions worth investigating, but it cannot guarantee performance across every crop, climate or irrigation programme.
Write down accepted specifications, unresolved issues and any further testing needed. Confirm how pre-shipment evidence will be tied to the actual order. Agree who approves a deviation before loading rather than assuming that sample approval settles every future difference.
Request an Agritropic sample with a clear brief
Agritropic samples are available on request. Sample charges are confirmed individually; shipping arrangements and costs are negotiable. The normal minimum order is one 40-foot container, with trial orders negotiable and no mixed-product containers. Final availability and lead time depend on the selected factory and are confirmed in the quotation.
Send the intended application, requested material, sample quantity, test requirements and destination. See cocopeat block specifications and ordering terms, or use our RFQ checklist to prepare the complete enquiry.
