Start with the material, not the name
Cocopeat, also called coir pith, is the finer fraction of processed coconut husk. Coconut husk chips are larger pieces. Suppliers may sell either as compressed blocks, so block shape alone does not tell you what is inside.
Coir pith absorbs water; chips combine water retention with spaces between particles. Particle size changes the air–water balance, so compare an expanded sample rather than judging only a compressed block. Technical reference: Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.
| Buyer consideration | Cocopeat / coir pith | Coconut husk chips |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | Finer pith; confirm screening and fiber content. | Coarser pieces; confirm chip size and fines. |
| Trial focus | Hydration, water distribution and compaction in your container. | Distribution of chips, spaces in the mix and irrigation response. |
| Specification | EC method, pH, treatment and expanded volume. | The same chemical checks, plus chip-size distribution. |
Choose through a small growing-system trial
Start with your current substrate and the problem you want to solve. Is water distribution uneven? Does the root zone stay wet too long? Are the particles suitable for the container size? Trial the proposed material or blend alongside your existing medium, under the same irrigation conditions.
Neither product name guarantees a particular growing result. Do not adopt a fixed blend ratio without checking your crop, irrigation water and fertigation plan with your grower or agronomist.

A sample-request checklist
- Crop, container dimensions and current growing medium.
- Particle-size range, proportion of fines and fiber content.
- Washed or buffered treatment, with supporting information.
- EC and pH results with the extraction method, units and sample identity.
- Expanded volume and the hydration and measurement procedure.
- Block weight, moisture, packing format and destination.
Compare offers on the same basis
Ask suppliers to quote against one written specification and one agreed sample procedure. A cheaper block is not necessarily a cheaper usable substrate if treatment, expanded volume or packing differ. Agree the sample acceptance criteria before a larger order.
